Although it’s obvious we aren’t going to break out in song and choreographed dances or have the class start and end within three minutes, there are some things that I was looking forward to for my high school experience from the movie “High School Musical” that simply aren’t reality for a normal high school student. Of course being delusional or being your own main character is definitely an option, there is more to consider throughout your high school years. Here’s a short list of things that went differently than I expected.
- Breaks Between Classes:
While there is a five minute “break” for passing during classes, I always used to think there would be more time for sitting a few minutes and socializing with friends. The five minutes are more really just for getting to your next class, and while it does allow for talking with friends, it’s more just for having a short conversation with people you pass by. I envisioned being able to sit in the library or getting a quick snack for a bit. You do have the option to walk with your friends to their or your classes of course, but you have to be sure to be at your next class on time. You also see the students in the movie sneaking around but you never see or hear of anyone being late or getting passes, which is sort of a big concern here.
- The Lockers
Because of Covid-19, we packed up our belongings and stuck to a computer screen for a while. When we were allowed to come back to in-person-school, carrying our backpacks was a must, and it’s just become the norm over the past year. I used to imagine being able to decorate my locker with pictures of friends and have a white board hanging up for reminders. I also think it would be nice to store sports equipment and stuff, lunch boxes, extra books and such. Even with all this considering, I honestly prefer carrying my bag around with me. I have everything I need without forgetting anything, and you don’t have to worry about remembering an extra lock code.
- The Musical
The musical productions of Ledyard High School are great, I’m not going to lie, but the movie depicts a very amplified image of what it’s like. Even though I’m not in the musical myself, I have friends who are and go to see them. The musical is super exaggerated, which figures since it is the name of the movie, but even so. It’s not like the star basketball player of our school randomly decides at the last minute that they are doing the play on top of sports, homework, and other responsibilities. The actors of the musical in the movie are also very dramatic and “me me me”, whereas in our school I don’t really hear of that being the case.
Although Ledyard High School is no High School Musical, and it’s not expected to be, it still offers great opportunities and classes so we cant be too upset about small details. These points are also very reasonable considering it’s a normal high school and not a set for a movie. Overall, there aren’t many complaints. The best way to stay in the best mindset you can everyday is to not let little details and people bother you too much because it’s not worth it. High School Musical is calling your name, so I’ll end it here.
