Amy Avery, a junior in Agri-Science, spends her Agri-Science class in Agricultural Mechanics, working hard on her classwork and SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience). Her teacher, Mr. Williams, says that Amy “is diligent in class and has a superior SAE working for a small metal-working shop.” He also commented on her ambition, calling it “consistent” and admiring her effort during her class. He also informed me that she was a Committee Chair last year, exhibiting her leadership. After obtaining information from Mr. Williams, I interviewed Amy and asked her Agri-Science-specific questions.
What has been your favorite thing about Ag so far?
My favorite thing about Ag is the trips that we take. I love getting to school early and boarding the bus or the Ag Truck and heading out to a competition or meeting.
What pathway have you chosen, and what drew you to that pathway?
I am in the Agricultural Mechanics pathway. My freshman year, I tried out for the Agricultural Mechanics competition and got on the team. Throughout the practices for the competition and the competition itself, I just got further drawn into the subject.
What is your goal in life, and how has Ag helped you move toward that goal?
My goal in life is to pursue a career as a welder. Ag has helped me build the practical skills through classes as well as the social skills I need to pursue my dreams.
If Ag has helped you move toward that goal, how has it?
Ag has helped me move toward my goal by helping me build leadership skills and by giving me the experience I will need right out of high school. The experience I gained in Ag helped me get an internship as a welder recently.
Mr. Williams nominated you. How has he impacted your time in Ag?
Mr.Willams has greatly impacted my time in Ag, he’s helped me overcome many obstacles. My freshman year I was extremely intimidated by entering a male-dominated field; I love metalworking but only 5% of welders are female. Mr. Willams helped me overcome that fear and build up more confidence by teaching me more and more about the metalworking field, eventually building my confidence in my trade enough to apply for an apprenticeship, which I ended up getting and now I am building career skills in and out of school.
