Thanksgiving Day Football

Every year, the Ledyard Colonels and the Fitch Falcons get together on Thanksgiving Day to play football and fight for “The Sword.” The Sword is a mounted plaque of wood that has a small, golden, metal plate on it.  This game is a big deal to not only the football teams, but to their schools as well. Having the sword in your team’s school trophy case represents a win on Thanksgiving morning.

Last year during this game, Fitch won back the sword after Ledyard had it for seven years straight. The game was down to the wire in the last quarter with only a few seconds left on the clock.  The score was close,  6-0, Fitch, and the Colonels were in scoring range. Junior Max Ebdon threw an interception to Tony Figueroa from Fitch, which allowed Fitch to take a win against Ledyard and win back the sword that year (2016).

After having the sword for so many years straight,, it was a hard loss for the Colonels. This year the Colonels, hoping for a big upset, play the Falcons again,  attempting to take back the sword.

This year, Fitch will most likely keep the sword at their school considering Ledyard’s football record is not the best with only two wins and a total of seven losses and the loss of our quarterback Ebdon. In addition, the Fitch Falcons have an undefeated record this season. If Ledyard wants to do the “impossible,” they need to work as a team and put forth all of their talent and effort.
