Another Year of Music

Meet the Choirs is a timeless event that helps mark the beginning of the school year. Freshmen perform in their first high school concert, while seniors start to wrap up their time in high school. There are different opinions about the event. Some are excited for the year to come, while others are sad that their time with Ledyard Music is coming to an end.

Sophomore Katelyn Hughes performed in Select, a traveling ensemble of altos and sopranos, for the first time at Meet the Choirs this year. “It was very exciting to go from my freshman year in Women’s to Select, a touring choir at school,” Hughes said, “Seeing all the choirs perform at Meet the Choirs was exciting because I was able to see how we’ve grown.” Hughes also spoke fondly about the music program by saying, “Ledyard music has helped me grow not only as a singer but has helped me come out of my shell and learn I am more than what I ever thought I was.”

For freshman Kiera Dempsey, Meet the Choirs was her first concert at Ledyard High School. The Chorale singer said, “It was so exciting to perform my first concert at the high school. Getting to see all the other choirs was so inspiring and made me want to try to move up.” Dempsey, who came to Ledyard as an agriculture student also said, “Choir has been such a fun way to meet new people in school and in after school groups.”

Katie Espinosa kicked off her last year of Ledyard music this October. The four-year member of choir and second year Chamber singer said, “It was bittersweet. I love choir and all the people in it, and I’m going to be sad to leave.” She followed with, “Choir has given me some great friends and great memories, and I’m excited for my last year.”

Every year, the singers are at different stages in their high school experience. It is fun to look back and see where they were the year before or think of where they could be in the years to follow.
