Ranting and Raving

We all have moments where it just feels like you need to let something out, whether it’s through ranting or raving. One small thing can set off a switch in your head, and before you know it, you’re suddenly nonstop talking about everything that may be bothering you or makes you feel excited. Ranting and raving can bring both positive and negative feelings held inside.

A popular rant among people at Ledyard High School recently has been about the upcoming/current holiday season. Teacher Bill Glenny shared, “It’s ludicrous that people have Christmas lights out the day after Halloween.” He believes Christmas should begin being celebrated after Thanksgiving or “from December 1st to the 25th, not any earlier.” Many of his students believe that decorations and Christmas vibes should begin being put up again on November 1st. For example, Junior Lillyanna Krupinski says, “Christmas starts as soon as the clock hits midnight on Halloween night.” Krupinski thinks, “Holiday cheer can also be spread on Thanksgiving, where it puts people in a cheerful mood while continuing to be still thankful and eat delicious food.” Although they have different thoughts, in the end, Christmas will still be celebrated and enjoyed, with holidays leading up to the end of the year.

On a more positive note, many students are going on an upcoming trip to Costa Rica to use their speaking skills they learn in Spanish class. Junior Nicole Doty couldn’t stop raving about the trip. She said she’s “excited to go shopping for swimwear and cute outfits.” Another junior, Hayley Peckham, who is also attending the trip, says that she’s excited for “swimming at the beaches, the nice water, and hot springs.” The trip is going to be a great experience, both for educational purposes and for fun.

Then there are people like the Assistant Principal Jim Buonocore, who have strong opinions about everyday things. He ranted that “It’s a waste of money to buy drinks from Dunkin or Starbucks” and that people should just “make coffee at home.” He also raved about the school’s temperature; many say the school heaters are confusing since they can be boiling one day and not enough heat the next. Buonocore says he’s “a big believer in cold air” because he believes it “kills germs and keeps people healthier.” Junior Ellison Wallace disagrees with Buonocore. Wallace believes that fun drinks from Dunkin or Starbucks are “worth the hype, and it’s just a way to make the day better!” Some students are confused about the temperature as well, like Sophomore Addison Robertson. She said, “I agree with Buonocore because one class will be freezing and the next will be hot, all in one, it’s very confusing.” One thing she disagrees with is when Buonocore said, “Cold weather kills germs.” Robertson believes that “we should have cold air, but it spreads sicknesses rather than keeping everyone healthier and the illnesses away.”f

Finally, freshman Delaney Grimm has been frequently raving about the new movie that recently came out, “Regretting You,” directed by Josh Boone and storied by Colleen Hoover. When the question was asked about whether she’s seen the movie, she jumped to say “Oh my gosh, he’s gorgeous,” about the actor Mason Thames, and added that the movie’s plot twist was unexpected, but she “loved it.” Sophomore Sophia Piatek, who has recently watched the movie, says, “The movie was full of excitement and plot twists, but overall very enjoyable.” Piatek also recommended people to watch it if they haven’t already!

Whether it’s complaining about celebrating Christmas early, getting excited for an upcoming trip, or talking nonstop about your new favorite movie, everyone has something to rant or rave about. In the end, these moments that make you burst with excitement are just simply being human; they help us relate to and understand each other better. No matter what the topic is, big or small, ranting and raving bring us together and show how much we all care about the little things in life.
