As athletic Colonels prepare for Spring Break, here is a review of how teams performed throughout the opening weeks of the 2016 Spring season.
Baseball: The boys’ opened their season on a successful note and recently defeated Woodstock Academy 10-2. Seniors Luke Saccone and Anthony Viteritto have filled key roles so far for the Colonels. You can check out the team on April 16 at the Matt Buriak field at 11.
Softball: It’s clear that Mother Nature refuses to allow softball to begin for Ledyard. The girls’ team have has to postpone all scheduled games due to weather conditions. However, with practices still being held, the opening game will allow Ledyard to show that they are a competitive team within the ECC.
Girls’ Tennis: Senior Olivia Lyon has won all of her single matches to date and is a clear threat within the ECC tournament. Sophomores Rachel Kane and Erika DeAndrade have also been key contributors to Ledyard’s early season performances. The girls won on April 15 at Ledyard High by defeating New London 5-2.
Boys’ Tennis: Ledyard defeated Montville 4-3 on April 11 and sophomore Will Reynolds has helped lead the team. Senior Kevin Hutchins and sophomores Trevor Hutchins, Nate McCracken and Brandon Donovan have also helped Ledyard be successful. The Colonels returned to action on April 15 in New London where they won 4-3.
Girls’ Lacrosse: The girls have been consistent so far and seniors Carina Mitchell and Maddie Tilton and sophomore Megan Larmann all scored goals to lead Ledyard against Woodstock Academy for their first win of the season on April 8.
Boys’ Lacrosse: Like softball, the weather has not been kind to the boys. They faced Waterford on April 12 and fell 13-2. They return to play on April 16 at 11 against Griswold at Ledyard soccer field/lacrosse field.
Girls’ Track: The girls’ defeated St. Bernards on April 6 but lost to Montville.Juniors Grace Ladoja, Alex Houdeshell and Isabelle Mercer all scored points for the Colonels. They will attend the Panther Invitational on April 23 in Plainfield.
Boys’ Track: Senior Josh Snow and Junior Zak King teamed together to sweep distance events as Ledyard rolled past both Montville and St. Bernard’s on April 6. Senior Nate Terry also won an event for the team.
Megan Brawner, Editor-in-Chief
Senior Megan Brawner is the Editor-in-Chief of the 2015-2016 Colonel. She is the captain of the cross country team and runs Indoor and Outdoor Track. She participates in Youth United for Global Action and Awareness (YUGA) Club and is the secretary of the Senior Class. She is the Editor of Key Club. She will attend Central Connecticut State University to study Business next fall.
