The Cat in the Hat Chitchat

This year, we’ll take a deep dive into pop culture drama and track the most trending news. Today’s topic is The Cat in the Hat. I know this topic sounds a bit childish given the fact that it is a childhood book written by Dr. Seuss, which later turned into a kids’ show, but recently there have been rumors that created controversy around the Cat in the Hat, making people debate if the way the Cat in the Hat is being perceived is even for kids anymore.

If the rumors didn’t already get to you, there are videos going around on the app TikTok of the Cat in the Hat replacing the role of the famous 2003 Mike Myers, who was the killer in the Halloween slasher horror film series. They are placing the Cat in the Hat in roles like walking around dark streets and lurking around people’s windows as if the Cat in the Hat were a killer like Mike Myers. This includes “sightings” of the Cat in the Hat lurking outside of windows, carrying a giant red balloon, standing in empty dark streets, and following and/or chasing people. On TikTok, you would find accounts of people stating they are the Cat in the Hat, making videos of themselves dressed up, saying where they are going, and listing a bunch of names of targets they are willing to chase.

The impact of this is felt in many different areas around the world. It has been confirmed that these videos going around of the Cat in the Hat are also AI-generated. Teenagers have been posting videos claiming it was just a “prank” which started a trend that spread across the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the UK. There have been accounts updating us on where the Cat in the Hat sightings are and where they are going next; the Cat in the Hat is luring children into parks and includes videos listing schools in the area as well as students’ names with included threats, which has caused schools to shut down and created a widespread panic internationally.

Teens might say it was just a “prank” but law enforcement has decided that this is a much more serious matter than what we might think. There have been reported arrests that have been made for teens being caught as the face behind the accounts. They would usually spend some time in juvenile detention, lasting from a few hours to a few months based on how serious the threat actually was. Law enforcement and other agencies were eventually starting to track as many accounts as possible, along with creating more safety requirements for schools, which has affected many schools in that area. For example, in New York there are strict rules that include that giant balloons are not allowed on school grounds. There have been consistent, temporary lockdowns in schools, and some places like Tennessee and Pennsylvania have apps to help flag those upcoming videos. In places where there are more threats, some schools have been keeping extra officers on school grounds to monitor the school perimeters.

Not only has this matter affected public places, it has also affected people. These rumors and videos have scared people, which has led to paranoia for many. Some students around Ledyard High School have reported back, saying that when they see these videos pop up on their ‘for you’ page they often give the students an unsettling feeling. Sophomore Ava Helme had said, “I have been getting tagged in Cat in the Hat videos from my friends, and it actually has been really scaring me.” These rumors are getting spread across schools more than you might think, which is really scaring students. Sophomore Brianna Rhodes told the story of when she and her friends were having a sleepover; they were sitting on the couch, and they kept hearing noises from a distant dark room. Then, all of a sudden, the shower turned on, then off. They all expressed that they were very freaked out about this coincidence. After this, a random white balloon popped up out of nowhere and specifically gathered itself towards the middle of the room. They decided to hit the balloon out of fear, but it somehow just stayed in place. After witnessing this, they all screamed and ran away in fear, saying they thought it was the Cat in the Hat. This story proves how the rumors of the Cat in the Hat are getting to people’s heads, creating paranoia. There have been reports of people saying they thought they saw him out of nowhere, not knowing that it’s all a fake.

So maybe the Cat in the Hat is not meant for kids anymore. People have created a happy childhood favorite into something to be scared of. This shows that sometimes, for pranks, there is such a thing as too far.
