Chorus Performs at Harkness Chapel

On March 11, Women’s and Men’s Choirs, Select Singers, Chamber Choir and Concert Choir performed in Harkness Chapel at Connecticut College at the Buriak Candler Benefit Concert. All the money, raised from the $5 admission, is goes to the high school’s scholarship foundation in honor of two deceased students.

Matt Buriak passed away after receiving a fatal head injury playing football. Lauren Candler passed away after receiving a fatal head injury horseback riding. Both were very involved in Ledyard. Candler was in the choir and agriscience program. Buriak was also in the choir, in addition to playing football. Their benefit concert raises money to give scholarships to one student involved in sports and music, a student in agriscience, and a student in choir, according to junior Carter Smith.

The performance was not only important because of the money it helped raise; it also held meaning for the participants. “I think the concert was pretty important because it gave a chance to show off how we have improved since the fall,” sophomore Dennis Leung said, a member of Men’s Chorus.

“It was also a great opportunity for women’s and men’s chorus to sing in a venue other than our auditorium,” junior and Select Singer Edie Parungao said. “The other groups get to do extra stuff like the New York trip or the Providence music festival.”

The benefit concert served not only to raise money for a worthwhile cause, but also to lend experience to and provide performance time for all the choirs.
